Data Analyst Resume Example: how to format it section by section
A data analyst resume example should show the question you answered, the tools you used and the decision your work supported. Lead with a skills block of SQL, spreadsheets and visualization tools, then write bullets as business problem, method and result. This guide includes a fictional sample you can adapt.
At a glance
- Name your tools exactly: SQL, spreadsheets, Python, a dashboard tool.
- Write each bullet as problem, method, result.
- Include one or two projects with a link if you are new to the field.
- Keep it to one page and avoid charts or graphics in the file.
How to format a data analyst resume, section by section
Header
Name, city and state, email, phone, and one link to a portfolio or dashboard gallery. Keep any shared work free of confidential company data.
Summary
Two lines: years, domain, core tools. Example: "Analyst with three years in retail operations, using SQL and dashboards to track inventory and sales trends." Career changers should state the domain they come from.
Skills
Split into Query and data (SQL, spreadsheets), Programming (Python or R), Visualization and Reporting, and Methods (cleaning, A/B analysis, forecasting). Put the tools from the posting first.
Experience
Use a pattern such as "Analyzed weekly sales data in SQL to find slow-moving items, helping the team adjust orders." State the audience, the cadence and the decision the output supported. Avoid inventing percentages; use ones you can show.
Education and credentials
Degree and coursework that fit the job (statistics, economics, information systems), plus certificates with the provider named. Add a projects section with two entries if you have limited paid experience.

EDUCATION
B.A. Economics, Example State University, 2022Tailor the data analyst resume to each posting
Read the posting and copy its exact terms into your summary, skills and bullets, but only where they describe work you have done. Put the requirement that appears first in the posting first in your skills block. If two jobs ask for different strengths, keep two versions of the data analyst resume rather than one vague one.
Before you send it, copy the resume into a plain text file and read it top to bottom. Headings should be in order, dates should line up and no line should be cut off. Then ask a friend in the field to read it for ten seconds and say what the job is. If they cannot, move your strongest data analyst facts higher.
Keywords recruiters scan for
Recruiters and screening software search for exact terms from the posting. These are common for a data analyst resume; use only the ones that are true for you, and match the spelling the job post uses.
data analyst, SQL, Excel, Python, data visualization, dashboard, data cleaning, reporting, statistics, stakeholders, A/B testing, forecasting.
Common data analyst resume mistakes
- Listing tools without saying what you did with them.
- Showing charts or images in the resume file.
- Using confidential company data in portfolio samples.
- Describing tasks instead of the decision your analysis supported.
- Overstating machine learning when your work was reporting.
