Medical Assistant Resume Example: how to format it section by section
A medical assistant resume example needs to show both sides of the job: clinical tasks like vital signs and specimen handling, and front-office tasks like scheduling and records. Split your skills into those two groups, name the practice type, and list any certification near the top. This guide adds a fictional sample.
At a glance
- Split skills into clinical and administrative groups.
- Name the practice type, such as family medicine or urgent care.
- List certification and CPR in a credentials line.
- Mention the electronic health record you used, if any.
How to format a medical assistant resume, section by section
Header
Add name, city and state, phone and email. If you hold a medical assistant certification, put it after your name or in a credentials line, followed by CPR or BLS. Employers in some states have specific expectations, so match your wording to the posting.
Summary
Two lines on your practice setting and strongest skills. Example: "Medical assistant with two years in a family medicine clinic, comfortable rooming patients, drawing blood and managing the schedule." Recent graduates can reference externship hours.
Skills
Use two short lists. Clinical: rooming patients, vital signs, injections as permitted, phlebotomy, specimen collection, EKG. Administrative: scheduling, insurance verification, referrals, electronic health record entry. Only list procedures you have performed under supervision.
Experience
Show the volume and the range: "Roomed 20 to 25 patients per day, recorded history and vital signs, and prepared exam rooms." Add a bullet about front-desk tasks if the posting asks for them. Use plain verbs and avoid patient details.
Education and credentials
List your program, school and year, then certification with the issuing body and status. An externship deserves its own line with the site type and hours if known.

EDUCATION
Medical Assisting Diploma, Example Career Institute, 2024Tailor the medical assistant resume to each posting
Read the posting and copy its exact terms into your summary, skills and bullets, but only where they describe work you have done. Put the requirement that appears first in the posting first in your skills block. If two jobs ask for different strengths, keep two versions of the medical assistant resume rather than one vague one.
Before you send it, copy the resume into a plain text file and read it top to bottom. Headings should be in order, dates should line up and no line should be cut off. Then ask a friend in the field to read it for ten seconds and say what the job is. If they cannot, move your strongest medical assistant facts higher.
Keywords recruiters scan for
Recruiters and screening software search for exact terms from the posting. These are common for a medical assistant resume; use only the ones that are true for you, and match the spelling the job post uses.
medical assistant, vital signs, phlebotomy, EKG, electronic health record, patient intake, scheduling, insurance verification, HIPAA, specimen collection, CPR, rooming patients.
Common medical assistant resume mistakes
- Listing only clinical or only front-office skills when the job needs both.
- Claiming procedures that your state or employer does not allow you to perform.
- Leaving off the externship, which is real experience for new graduates.
- Missing the certification name and status.
- Writing long paragraphs instead of short bullets.
