About the role
Scholars from NHC Institutional Sponsor universities, including the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, are exclusively eligible to participate in the four-week Select Summer Residency Program, in June, intended to assist in jump-starting or making substantial progress on a current project.
Scholars are nominated and sponsored by their home institutions and must be humanities scholars or scholars working on a humanities project who have completed a PhD or the equivalent for fields in which a terminal Master’s degree is standard. Through this program, faculty from sponsoring institutions can experience a concentrated period of supported research and intellectual exchange at the Center, a hospitable setting customized for and highly conducive to humanities research and writing.
The College of Arts and Sciences and the Institute for the Arts and Humanities are proud to support faculty selected for this prestigious program.
Please note: this application is for UNC-Chapel Hill faculty members who want to be considered for one of two nominations to the National Humanities Center Select Summer Residency Program. If chosen as an institutional nominee from UNC, applicants will be notified by the NHC and given additional information. For more information, please visit the NHC program website and review the Frequently Asked Questions.
Who may apply?
Faculty engaged in humanities research in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of North Carolina may self-nominate. Department chairs may identify faculty in their department and encourage them to apply. Department chairs may also elect to nominate a member of their department after verifying interest and availability.
The College of Arts and Sciences and the Institute for the Arts and Humanities want to ensure that nominees for the Select Summer Residency Program are in a good position to take full advantage of this support.
- Nominees must agree to remain in residence for the duration of the program.
- Nominees must be humanities scholars or engaged in a humanities project.
- Nominees must be full-time permanent faculty at UNC-Chapel Hill
- Additionally, junior faculty who are preparing for tenure review, mid-career faculty who are completing a long-term project and preparing for promotion to full professor, or any faculty member who is transitioning out of a service appointment and restarting a research project would all be competitive candidates for nomination
Who is involved in the nomination process?
Nominees will be reviewed by representatives of the College of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Office and the Institute for the Arts and Humanities. Elizabeth Engelhardt, Senior Associate Dean for Fine Arts and Humanities, serves as the Institutional Sponsor Representative for UNC. Dean Engelhardt will provide the names of UNC’s two nominees to the National Humanities Center.
