About our group

You will be working in the HAMR Media Recording Physics and Advanced Development group at the Seagate Recording Media Research Center in Fremont, CA, where we develop the state of art magnetic, optical and thermal, spin-stand recording characterization for recording Physics understanding and design directions for HAMR magnetic recording media to further extend data storage capacity. The team works closely with other teams in the organization such as the Sputter, testing, metrology and equipment groups, the materials science lab, and collaborators in the various Seagate organizations around the world. Together we develop the next generation of storage devices for cloud storage and other emerging applications.

About the role - you will

  • Work in the Recording Physics and Advanced Development group at Seagate Recording Media R&D center to develop and improve existing magnetic characterization, spin-stand recording testing and data analytics for studying the media magnetic, electrical and thermal properties, and compare with simulations and recording data to understand recording physics of HAMR (Heat Assited Magnetic Recording) and future novel recording media, such as ferroelectric media.
  • Understand and utilize the existing magnetics characterization tools (PPMS and MOKE)
  • Utilize existing and develop new spin-stand testing and other characterization techniques for  HAMR media and future advanced ferroeletric recording media.
  • Develop and enhance testing code and metholody for HAMR media recording Physics and design direction understanding
  • Work with the team to support the spin-stand tester hardware and software upgrade
  • Utilize data analysis technique and apply AI techniques to compare experimental measurements with modeling results to understand the underlying media design direction and recording Physics
  • Apply the learnings for innovative design to improve the magnetic, electric and thermal design of advanced recording HAMR or ferroelectric media
  • Develop metrology capability of eletrical and imaging characterization, such as Piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) to test and evaluate ferroelectric media
  • Hardware and software integration of the testing and data aqusition instruments to perform recording demonstration and evaluation of advanced media design or architecture
  • Apply computer simulation to understand and improve media design and compare modeling and experimental result to drive for media design improvement directions

About you

  • You have strong knowledge and hands-on experience with magnetic characterization techniques, including PPMS and MOKE, as well as high-field magnetic, electrical, and mechanical measurement equipment.
  • You have experience with electrical and PFM imaging and characterization of ferroelectric materials and media.
  • You have demonstrated experience developing, integrating, and implementing new metrology and testing tools to enable advanced characterization of magnetic and ferroelectric materials.
  • You are innovative and technically curious, with a passion for developing new characterization and measurement capabilities.
  • You are analytical and detail-oriented, with a strong approach to solving complex technical problems.
  • You work collaboratively across teams to develop, integrate, and improve metrology and testing solutions.
