Software engineer job description template

LiveRec EditorialUpdated

US format, as of 30 Oct 2026.

A software engineer job description should say what the engineer will build and own, the languages and systems they need on day one, the level of independence expected, and the pay range. Copy the block below, pick a level variant, and cut every tool you will not actually test.

At a glance

  • Name the product area and team size; engineers read these first.
  • List 3 to 5 core technologies, not 15.
  • Say how you interview (e.g., one coding exercise, one design discussion) and the timeline.
  • Pay range: check BLS for the occupation and your own bands. Do not copy numbers from another company.

How to use it

  1. Pick the level and delete the other columns.
  2. Replace every placeholder; if you cannot fill "outcome", define it with the hiring manager.
  3. Convert each "What you need" bullet into a row on your scorecard.
  4. Build interview questions from the engineering question bank.

Customization notes

  • Remote: list eligible states; note if pay is location-adjusted.
  • Visa sponsorship: state your policy plainly ("We sponsor" / "We do not sponsor") so candidates do not waste time. Do not make citizenship a requirement unless the law requires it.
  • Degree: "BS in CS or equivalent experience". A degree-only filter narrows your pool.
  • Security-sensitive roles: if background checks apply, say so and follow FCRA steps.
  • Avoid: "rockstar", "ninja", "young and energetic", "digital native".

FAQ

How many technologies should I list? Core ones the person uses weekly. Long stacks scare off capable engineers and tell nothing about priority.

Should I require a degree? Only if the role needs one. Say "or equivalent experience".

Should the take-home be paid? That is your policy call. Cap its length and say so in the posting.

Where do I get the salary band? From your own compensation data, then check against BLS occupation data and local postings. Do not invent a band.

Next step

Post it from Post a job or paste into your ATS, then prepare the interview question bank.
