Retail Associate job description template

LiveRec EditorialUpdated

US format, federal rules as of 30 Oct 2026. State and local rules vary.

A retail associate helps customers, runs the register, keeps the sales floor stocked and supports store goals. A fair job description states hours and how far in advance schedules are posted, hourly pay, lifting and standing demands, and any sales or customer-service targets.

At a glance

  • State store hours, weekend and holiday requirements and how schedules are posted.
  • Mention physical demands honestly: standing, lifting and stocking.
  • Say whether commission or sales goals apply.

How to customize it

  • Scheduling laws: some states and cities require advance notice of schedules or pay for changes. Check where your store is.
  • Minors: if you hire people under 18, hours and task limits apply.
  • Tips and commissions: explain how they are paid and reported.
  • Dress code: tie any requirement to the job and allow religious and medical accommodations.
  • Level: delete the junior or senior wording that does not apply, and cut every requirement you would not screen for.
  • Pay: enter your own approved range. Several states require a range in the posting; see pay transparency laws.

FAQ

Do I need to list the hourly pay? Where state or local pay transparency laws apply, yes. It is also a good practice in a role that attracts many applicants.

Can I require open availability? You can ask for it, but it may screen out caregivers and students. Describe the real scheduling needs instead.

Next step
