Remote job description template

LiveRec EditorialUpdated

A remote job description is a normal job description plus four things: where the person may live, what hours or time zone they must cover, what equipment and costs you provide, and how performance is measured. Copy the template below, replace the brackets, and remove anything that is not true.

US format, as of 31 October 2026.

At a glance

  • State the eligible states or countries. Pay, tax and pay-range rules depend on where the person works. See hiring remote employees across states.
  • Include the pay range if any eligible state or city requires it. See pay transparency laws.
  • Describe the real schedule, not "flexible" if there are core hours.
  • Say whether the role is exempt or non-exempt, because it affects overtime and timekeeping.

Notes before you post

  • Location and pay. If you vary pay by location, say how.
  • Hours. If the person is non-exempt, they must record time and be paid for overtime under the FLSA where covered. The Department of Labor lists the federal rules.
  • Equal opportunity. The EEOC prohibits job ads that discourage applicants because of protected traits. Avoid "digital native", "recent graduate" or similar phrases.
  • Honesty. Do not promise "work from anywhere" if you cannot hire in some states.

For other roles, start from the job description templates.
