What is Shops and Establishments Act?
A Shops and Establishments Act is a state law in India that regulates shops, offices and commercial establishments: registration, opening hours, weekly holidays, leave and employment conditions. Each state has its own Act or rules, so details differ. Labour is on the concurrent list, so the Labour Codes and state laws operate together.
Example
An IT office in one state may have to register under that state's Act and follow its holiday list, while the Labour Codes add central duties such as appointment letters. Always check your state labour department.
