What is a job requisition?
A job requisition is an internal request, usually approved by a manager and finance or HR, to open a position and start hiring for it. It is often called a req. It is not the public job posting: the requisition authorizes the hire, and the posting advertises the role to candidates.
What it typically contains
A requisition usually states the job title, department, reporting line, whether the role is new or a backfill, the approved pay range, location, target start date and the hiring manager. Many companies assign a requisition number that links the posting, the applicants and the eventual hire in the applicant tracking system.
Requisition versus posting
One requisition can lead to several postings, such as an internal one and an external one, or to several hires if the headcount is more than one. Recruiters often work from requisition numbers, and candidates may see the req ID on the posting.
Example
A manager submits a requisition to backfill a departed analyst. After approval, a recruiter publishes a posting and tracks every applicant against the requisition number.
