What is Form 12BB?
Form 12BB is the statement a salaried employee in India gives the employer to claim certain tax benefits, so the employer deducts the right TDS from salary. It is used for items such as house rent allowance, leave travel concession and home loan interest, and the employer may ask for proofs.
When employers ask for it
Employers usually collect Form 12BB or an equivalent online declaration at the start of the financial year and again near its end for proofs. If you submit nothing, payroll deducts TDS without those benefits and you may claim them when you file your return. The exact items you can claim depend on the tax regime you choose, which is why you should check the current Income Tax Department rules.
Who files what
You give the declaration to your employer. The employer reports the final salary and TDS in Form 16. Keep rent receipts, loan certificates and other proofs, since both the employer and the tax department can ask for them.
Example
A salaried employee who pays rent submits a declaration to payroll in April listing her rent and landlord details, then uploads receipts in February. Her TDS for the year is calculated using those figures.
