Teacher Resume Example: how to format it section by section
A teacher resume example should put your state certification, grade level and subject first, then show what students did in your classroom. Use short bullets on planning, instruction and assessment, and add any specialty such as ESL or special education. This guide covers each section with a fictional sample.
At a glance
- Lead with state certification, grade level and subject.
- Show instruction, assessment and classroom management in bullets.
- Describe student progress only with results you can support.
- Add endorsements such as ESL or special education.
How to format a teacher resume, section by section
Header
Name, city and state, phone, email, then a credentials line, for example "Anystate teaching license, grades 6 to 8 mathematics". Districts check licensure, so state its type and status plainly.
Summary
Two lines: grade, subject, strengths. Example: "Middle school mathematics teacher with four years of experience, skilled in differentiated instruction and using assessment data to plan lessons."
Skills
Include curriculum planning, differentiated instruction, classroom management, assessment, family communication and technology tools the district uses. For specialist roles add IEP support, ESL strategies or reading intervention.
Experience
Write what you taught and what changed: "Taught five sections of grade 7 mathematics and used weekly quizzes to group students for small-group practice." Add committee, coaching or mentoring roles briefly.
Education and credentials
Degree, school and year, then licensure, endorsements and student teaching placement with grade and subject. New teachers should give student teaching its own entry.

EDUCATION
B.S. Education (Mathematics), Example State University, 2021Tailor the teacher resume to each posting
Read the posting and copy its exact terms into your summary, skills and bullets, but only where they describe work you have done. Put the requirement that appears first in the posting first in your skills block. If two jobs ask for different strengths, keep two versions of the teacher resume rather than one vague one.
Before you send it, copy the resume into a plain text file and read it top to bottom. Headings should be in order, dates should line up and no line should be cut off. Then ask a friend in the field to read it for ten seconds and say what the job is. If they cannot, move your strongest teacher facts higher.
Keywords recruiters scan for
Recruiters and screening software search for exact terms from the posting. These are common for a teacher resume; use only the ones that are true for you, and match the spelling the job post uses.
teaching license, certified teacher, lesson planning, differentiated instruction, classroom management, assessment, standards-aligned, IEP, ESL, parent communication, student engagement, learning management system.
Common teacher resume mistakes
- Leaving out the license type, grade levels or subject.
- Writing a philosophy paragraph instead of results.
