Sales Representative Resume Example: how to format it section by section
A sales representative resume example should show how you sold, to whom and with what result against your target. Lead with a summary of territory and deal type, then write bullets on pipeline, quota attainment and customer relationships. This guide covers each section with a fictional sample and keywords to use.
At a glance
- Name your market, territory and deal type.
- State results as percent of quota or accounts won, only if true.
- List the CRM tool and sales methods you use.
- Show prospecting and relationship work separately.
How to format a sales representative resume, section by section
Header
Name, city and state, phone, email, and a professional profile link. A clear territory or remote availability line helps recruiters route you.
Summary
Two lines: market, deal type, strengths. Example: "Inside sales representative with three years selling software subscriptions to small businesses, consistent at prospecting and follow-up."
Skills
Group prospecting, discovery, demos, negotiation and account management, then systems (CRM, email sequencing, call tools). Add industry knowledge that the posting names.
Experience
Use numbers you can prove: "Met monthly quota in 9 of 12 months and maintained a pipeline of 40 active prospects." Say how you sourced deals, how long cycles ran and what size accounts you handled, without confidential figures.
Education and credentials
Degree or equivalent, then sales training or certification. If you have awards, give them one line with the reason.

This sample uses an invented name and employers. Replace every line with your own facts, and keep any figure you add real and provable.

EDUCATION
B.A. Communications, Example State University, 2021Tailor the sales representative resume to each posting
Read the posting and copy its exact terms into your summary, skills and bullets, but only where they describe work you have done. Put the requirement that appears first in the posting first in your skills block. If two jobs ask for different strengths, keep two versions of the sales representative resume rather than one vague one.
Before you send it, copy the resume into a plain text file and read it top to bottom. Headings should be in order, dates should line up and no line should be cut off. Then ask a friend in the field to read it for ten seconds and say what the job is. If they cannot, move your strongest sales representative facts higher.
Keywords recruiters scan for
Recruiters and screening software search for exact terms from the posting. These are common for a sales representative resume; use only the ones that are true for you, and match the spelling the job post uses.
sales representative, quota attainment, pipeline, prospecting, CRM, account management, cold calling, discovery, negotiation, closing, territory, lead generation.
Common sales representative resume mistakes
- Giving results with no quota, base or time period.
- Mixing prospecting and account management without labels.
- Leaving out the CRM and tools you know.
- Inflating numbers that a reference could contradict.
- Listing personality traits instead of selling steps.
