Accountant Resume Example: how to format it section by section
An accountant resume example should show your credentials, the accounting software you use and the work you own in the close and reporting cycle. Put CPA status or progress near the top, write bullets about accuracy and deadlines, and keep client or company data out. This guide covers each section with a fictional sample.
At a glance
- Show CPA licensure or exam progress honestly in the header.
- List accounting software and Excel skills by name.
- Describe the close, reconciliations and reporting you own.
- Include audit or tax experience if the posting asks for it.
How to format an accountant resume, section by section
Header
Name, city and state, phone, email, then credentials such as "CPA, State of Anystate" or "CPA candidate, passed two exam sections". Be exact: state boards license CPAs, and employers verify.
Summary
Two lines: years, area, systems. Example: "Staff accountant with three years in month-end close, reconciliations and reporting, comfortable in cloud accounting software and Excel."
Skills
List accounting areas (accounts payable, receivable, reconciliations, month-end close, financial reporting, tax preparation, audit support), then software and tools by name, then analytical and Excel skills such as lookups and pivot tables.
Experience
Write ownership and scope: "Prepared bank and credit card reconciliations monthly and cleared variances before close." Add the number of entities or accounts you handled if known and shareable. Do not reveal confidential figures.
Education and credentials
Degree and school, then licensure, exam progress or other credentials with state and status. Add continuing education only if relevant to the target role.

EDUCATION
B.S. Accounting, Example State University, 2021Tailor the accountant resume to each posting
Read the posting and copy its exact terms into your summary, skills and bullets, but only where they describe work you have done. Put the requirement that appears first in the posting first in your skills block. If two jobs ask for different strengths, keep two versions of the accountant resume rather than one vague one.
Before you send it, copy the resume into a plain text file and read it top to bottom. Headings should be in order, dates should line up and no line should be cut off. Then ask a friend in the field to read it for ten seconds and say what the job is. If they cannot, move your strongest accountant facts higher.
Keywords recruiters scan for
Recruiters and screening software search for exact terms from the posting. These are common for an accountant resume; use only the ones that are true for you, and match the spelling the job post uses.
staff accountant, month-end close, reconciliation, accounts payable, accounts receivable, financial statements, journal entries, GAAP, audit support, Excel, CPA, tax preparation.
Common accountant resume mistakes
- Overstating CPA status when exam sections are still pending.
- Listing duties with no scope or system names.
- Including confidential company figures.
- Burying Excel and accounting software skills.
- Using vague phrases like "detail oriented" without an example.
